Hockey at Malvern

The outstanding facilities with the new water-based pitch and the double indoor sports arena at Malvern allow us to run a range of boys and girls senior and junior teams for outdoor and indoor competitions.

The main Hockey term for girls is in the Autumn Term and for boys is the Lent Term but continued development takes place throughout the year through club links, 1-1 sessions, strength and conditioning and fixtures in all three terms. Alongside this, we have an elite player programme which is proven to produce international athletes. We are very proud of our coaching staff. We have a number of coaches who have played and coached Hockey at both National Premier League and International levels (indoor and outdoor).

Pathway development

The College fully supports the national governing bodies of several international hockey playing federation countries. We work closely with the England Hockey Single System.

College Staff

Master I/C Hockey: Mark Moss

Since 2008, I have enjoyed seeing Malvern College Hockey go from strength to strength. During my time here we have moved from a school that just played Hockey to being one of the foremost Hockey schools in the region - especially at Indoor Hockey.

Before finding my passion for coaching I played National League Hockey (both Indoor and Outdoor) for Stourport Hockey Club. I am currently a Level 3 England Hockey coach, with aspirations to Stourport Ladies 1st team, who play in National Conference North (the only ladies team in Worcestershire to be playing at this level). I was the England Hockey Centrally Contracted Coach and in my first year at Malvern College, I was recognised by England Hockey as the 'Young Performance Coach of the Year' at the inaugural Annual awards dinner 2008. I was subsequently appointed Assistant Coach to the England U16 girls' team in 2010/11.

Head Coach: Joanna Turnbull

I have been working at Malvern College since 2011 and, throughout my time here, I have been heavily involved in the Girls’ Hockey programme. I have been involved in coaching the 1st XI, 2nd XI and U15As hockey teams as well as the U18s and U16s at both Indoor and Outdoor. In my ever-expanding role I now oversee all single system activity. I have been a head coach at the academy centre level for the past four years. My love of Hockey began when I was at school and I quickly got involved in club Hockey at Maidstone Hockey Club in Kent. From there I went to the University of Birmingham and have played at their Hockey club for the last 12 years highlights of which include gaining promotion to the National Premier League and playing in that League since 2010, twice reaching play-off finals for the national title and 2 BUSA Finals and winning the Investec Women’s National Cup.
