Practical and investigative exercises are used to support the development of pupils’ knowledge as they are made aware of the industrial, social and economic aspects of the Biology they are studying.

An experienced and committed staff stimulate pupils’ interest in, and enjoyment of, Biology so that they feel encouraged to continue their studies in the subject. This extends to ensuring pupils are aware of career opportunities in Biology and related subjects.

In the Foundation Year (Year 9), all pupils study Biology. At the end of the FY pupils can choose between Science Double Award (Combined Award) or Biology as a separate subject. Biology is available as a Sixth Form subject in both the A level and the International Baccalaureate courses of study. Sixth Form pupils have the option of attending residential field trips as well as day trips to zoos or other places of biological interest. The Biology department has six well-stocked laboratories and practical work forms a significant part in all of the courses taught. A large lecture theatre is shared with other departments, and used for talks, demonstrations, and other occasions where large groups are addressed.
