In the Lower School, pupils can study any combination of French, German and Spanish within the core languages curriculum. From September 2017, pupils arriving in the Foundation Year will have the opportunity to take short, taster courses in both Spanish and German, where they have had no, or very little, prior tuition in these subjects. Exposure to a new language at this stage has proved to be very popular, with a number of pupils in recent years going on to study these subjects into the Sixth Form and beyond.

Pupils in the Foundation Year who have some experience in German and Spanish are encouraged to broaden and develop their skills in more advanced classes, with this programme running alongside French classes that are also set on ability, up to native-speaker level. Catering for the opportunity to study any combination of these three languages at (I)GCSE helps provide pupils with real flexibility in their choice of subjects, and paves the way for poly-lingual pupils to specialise in the field of Modern Languages. In addition, privately arranged tuition is available in the Lower School in Italian, Japanese, Mandarin and Russian.
