The core Physical Education programme is offered in the FY (Year 9) and the Remove (Year 10). The rationale of the programme is to build on pupils’ experiences and physical development through a range of activities that provide a broad and balanced curriculum.

Pupils explore a range of activities which include Dance, Gymnastics, Swimming, Health Related Fitness alongside the traditional games. The aims of the core curriculum include the understanding of safe exercise and how it affects the body, judging their performance and those of their peers, providing recommendations on how to improve. Alongside these aims we seek to encourage the demonstration of qualities such as independence, integrity, self-awareness, resilience and collaboration.

Academic PE begins in the Remove (Year 10) when approximately half of the pupils opt to follow a course leading to GCSE Physical Education. In the Sixth Form, Physical Education is offered as an A level course in addition to the leading new Sports, Exercise and Health Science (SEHS) module of the International Baccalaureate. The A level syllabus is based on the interaction between the theory and practice of Physical Education. These courses are supported through educational visits such as attending a university Human Performance Laboratory.

These qualifications provide an excellent foundation for pupils intending to apply to university to study Physiotherapy, Sport and Exercise Science as well as Health & Nutrition. Many pupils at Malvern have gone onto study at top universities such as the University of Birmingham, Loughborough University and the University of Exeter.
