IQ and the advantages EQ and CQ?

At Malvern and seek not only to raise pupils’ IQ, but also, and arguably more importantly, raise their EQ and CQ.

Emotional Intelligence (EQ) relates to “a person’s ability to use and to adapt their emotions to further their cause in a positive manner” whilst Cultural Intelligence (CQ) will influence “someone’s ability to interact and perform in a multicultural context or environment, both of which are so very important in our changing world.

IQ CQ and EQ

Malvern College is fundamentally about community and it is known for its strong academic focus, its family atmosphere, its wonderful pastoral care and its global outlook. We embed all of these into our daily lives ”EQ is now a crucial skill for children to learn.  It is not simply a cliché or buzzword; it is real.  Research suggests that children with high EQs are more likely to succeed than children without it because their entire attitude and purpose lead them to be able to build relationships, be more open in discussion and – not to put too fine a point on it – simply get on better with other people in a more positive fashion. Self-Awareness – one of the eleven ‘Malvern Qualities’ – is crucial to EQ and children with a high EQ will understand their feelings and emotions, controlling them rather than letting them influence their own decision making.  Empathy is crucial in any relationship and children with a high EQ will have this in spades. Such people are aware of the emotions of others and therefore have a greater ability to work alongside others in teams with a positive attitude, a greater sense of control and ultimately an increased productivity.  Someone with cultural awareness and appreciation (CQ) works far more effectively in culturally diverse environments.  In an increasingly cosmopolitan world, having a high CQ is going to be key in building trust amongst friends and colleagues.  Knowledge of different cultures builds bridges and allows strategies to flow and integrate in cross-cultural situations.  With its global outlook and impressive portfolio of International Schools, Malvern puts an increasing emphasis not only on the children becoming ‘global citizens’ but also on the need for CQ and EQ amongst its community, which is even more important now than it ever was.  We value EQ and CQ very highly and recognise that, along with IQ, the children in our care will develop an intelligence that will prepare them better for the modern world and allow them to embrace any opportunity that might come their way. We achieve this through our substantial and diverse Co-Curriculum and Super-Curriculum programmes. This alongside our distinct feeling of ‘home away from home’ within our boarding houses, is how our pupils develop their own cultural and emotional intelligence, preparing them for life beyond Malvern College.
