Football at Malvern

Football has a long and successful tradition at Malvern College, all of our coaches involved with our boys and girls teams have FA qualifications.

Football is very popular at Malvern College: we have six Senior boys’ teams, four Junior boys’ teams and two Senior girls’ teams, as well as recreational matches.

For our Senior pupils, football is available in the autumn and spring terms three times a week. We also offer a co-curricular club twice a week which is open to pupils from all year groups. The autumn term is predominantly focused around progressing in Cup competitions, with both boys’ and girls’ 1st XIs entering the Independent Schools Football Association U18 Cup and U18 Shield, as well as the English Schools Football Association U18 Cup. We also regularly play local schools and clubs in the autumn term and have opportunities for our Recreational XI to play in matches.

The spring term is our main season. We have block fixtures for all year groups, with up to 12 teams playing in a given week. Our Girls’ 1st XI completes in the ISFA National 7s and we also hold inter-house tournaments, so there are plenty of opportunities for everyone to play.

Built on historic connections and a shared belief in developing young people, the partnership brings together the expertise, ambition and values of the Malvern College Family of Schools and one of the world’s most recognised football clubs.

Through the programme, pupils will have opportunities to develop their football skills, Learn from a world-leading football philosophy and experience new perspectives on the game, while building the confidence, teamwork and resilience that extend far beyond the pitch.

Coaching & Player Development

Our coaching philosophy is centred on developing intelligent, adaptable footballers within an environment that is both challenging and
enjoyable.

The programme is led by the Director of Football, supported by highly qualified coaches including UEFA A Licence coach Mr Harris. Additional specialist coaches work throughout the programme, while our partnership with Chelsea FC further enhances the quality of coaching available to Malvern pupils.

Our most advanced players also benefit from performance analysis, strength and conditioning, GPS monitoring and individual development planning, helping them maximise their potential both on and off the pitch.

Performance Pathway

For pupils with ambitions to progress beyond school football, Malvern provides a clear pathway.

Our senior teams compete annually in the Independent Schools Football Association (ISFA) Cup and Shield, regularly reaching the latter stages of national competition. Our partnership with Chelsea Football Club and strong links with local clubs additional opportunities for player development and exposure, while our wider football network helps support pupils seeking opportunities within academy, university and representative football.

Beyond school, pupils also become part of a lifelong football community through the Old Malvernians Football Club, whose proud tradition continues to connect generations of Malvern footballers.

Local club links

In addition to our partnership with Chelsea Football Club, Malvern College has strong links with local clubs and talented footballers can train and play outside of school for Worcester City FC and Leigh & Bransford FC. There are also opportunities for pupils to trial and play for the ISFA representative team, either at regional or national level.

Football Scholarships at Malvern College

At Malvern College, we are proud to encourage talented young footballers who demonstrate exceptional ability, commitment and potential. Our Scholarships, available at 13+ and 16+ entry, recognise pupils who show technical skill, tactical understanding and a strong passion for the game.

Scholars benefit from expert coaching led by our professional coaching staff, access to excellent pitches and performance facilities, and opportunities to represent the College in competitive school and regional fixtures.

To apply, candidates must be registered for entry to Malvern College and submit a Scholarship application by the published deadline. Assessment includes practical trials and an interview with our Coaching Team.
