“Occupying a 250-acre site on the edge of the Malvern Hills, the magnificent setting of this self-assured school is matched by the dynamism of its pupils. The effort comes from them, our researcher is told, and might take the form of producing and directing their own performances, staging fundraising events or setting up a new academic society.
Whatever they do, they are encouraged to take risks, try new things and discover who they are; a ‘can-do’ approach that’s reflected in the college’s own endeavours. Thus, the Memorial Library is being sensitively repurposed as a Sixth-form centre – modelled on a university learning space – and The Grub is being given a makeover with a cool new café and co-working area.
Our researcher was impressed by the sports centre, with its yoga and Pilates studios, and the ‘Soho backstreet’ ambience of the theatre. And we love the sound of the Malvern College Challenge, a cycling expedition lasting three weeks, during which access to social media is barred.
Welcoming head Keith Metcalfe gets the thumbs-up from his charges, and is described by a Sixth-former as someone who ‘wants what is best for the school’. And his success can be judged by his leavers’ destinations: in 2023, 75 per cent received offers from their first-choice universities.”
