Which School Advisor Review

Which School Advisor Review

A parent guide which reviews education around the world has branded the Malvern Hills setting of one school as “one of the most spectacular we have ever seen”.

Which School Advisor, the independent guide that reviews leading schools across the UK and internationally from historic Eton to international campuses in Dubai, Thailand, and beyond, highlighted Malvern College for its unique combination of academic excellence, character development, and a strong sense of community.

Commenting on its setting, the guide said: “Then there is the campus. Set against the Malvern Hills, it is quite simply one of the most spectacular school settings we have ever seen. Historic buildings, expansive green spaces, and wide views combine to create a sense of scale and calm that is hard to replicate and impossible to forget.”

Once dubbed ‘the English Alps’, the Malvern Hills, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, is an eight-mile, 600-million-year-old ridge known for dramatic scenery, natural spring water, and Iron Age forts.

It is a setting that Malvern College is not only justifiably proud of but which it exploits to the benefit of its pupils.

Its dedicated Outdoor Education instructors run a huge range of regular co-curricular clubs for pupils as well as major expeditions and weekend trips. Regular clubs include climbing and mountain biking while the much-celebrated ‘Hunted’ event, which sees pupils trying to evade capture while hiding out in the hills, offers a unique opportunity to hone and strengthen their values, known as the Malvern Qualities.

But the guide noted that what distinguishes Malvern College is not just the “truly special campus” nor any single headline feature, but the way academic ambition, character education, outdoor learning and pastoral care are carefully interwoven into everyday school life.

Malvern College offers a broad range of post-16 pathways including the International Baccalaureate Diploma, A-levels, and selected BTEC qualifications. The review praised the absence of hierarchy between routes with pupils encouraged to choose the path that suits them best. One student told Which School Advisor: “There’s no pressure either way – it’s definitely about what suits you best.”

Headmaster Keith Metcalfe said: “We are really proud that Which School Advisor has recognised not just the strength of our education but the extraordinary setting in which it takes place. The Malvern Hills provide a unique backdrop that inspires learning, adventure, and personal growth and we make full use of that environment through outdoor education, co-curricular activities and experiential learning.

“Our aim is for pupils to be academically ambitious, confident, and kind while also developing resilience, independence and a connection to the world around them, qualities that our setting helps nurture every day.”

The review highlighted the school’s welcoming atmosphere, noting “a confidence here that doesn’t need to shout” and a “refreshing lack of formality” among staff and pupils alike despite the College’s heritage and prestigious setting. Boarding life was described as a “true home-from-home,” while day pupils are fully integrated into house life, reinforcing a strong sense of belonging across the whole school community.

Which School Advisor concluded that Malvern College “succeeds not by chasing trends but by holding its nerve,” standing out as “a quietly confident and highly credible choice” for families seeking academic breadth alongside character development and pastoral strength.

Mr Metcalfe said: “Malvern has always been about more than just qualifications or exam results. Our focus is on helping young people grow into role models – thoughtful, resilient, and outward-looking adults supported by a community where positive example matters and pupils learn as much from the people around them as from the classroom. We’re proud that this review reflects the everyday reality of life at the College.”
