What do you get when you put two separated-at-birth pairs of twins, a dodgy Goldsmith, and a sadistic doctor all in the same city? These factors make Shakespeare’s The Comedy of Errors a riotous play exploring mistaken identity, separation and family reunion. This production by lower sixth dramatists was a vibrant, energetic and hilarious take on one of Shakespeare’s earliest plays.
Antipholus of Syracuse (Harry G), Antipholus of Ephesus (Nicholas W) and their servants Dromio of Syracuse (Eve L) and Dromio of Ephesus (Freya S) delivered their roles with superb comedic timing and physical performance skills, which delighted the audience. Cati R as Adriana, Georgie C as Luciana, Adina Y as Dr Pinch and Surya R as Angelo all added to the mayhem of Shakespeare’s sequence of improbable events. Amelie K was a commanding presence as the autocratic Duke, who is ultimately won over by the emotional protestations of Nelly F’s Egeon. This production was fast-paced, witty and vibrant, and warmly appreciated by the audience, viewing in-person and online.
