Following a closely contested inter-house hockey tournament, in which No.5 edged past School House (SH) on goal difference, there was a heightened sense of anticipation ahead of the Prichard Racket final between Toby C (No.5) and Ed T (SH).
Toby made a confident start, quickly establishing control from the service box and moving into an early lead. Despite a number of well-judged shots from Ed, Toby’s consistency and precision allowed him to build momentum and take the opening game convincingly.
The second game continued in a similar vein, with both players producing rallies of real quality. Ed showed determination to get on the scoreboard, including a well-executed serve, but Toby’s composure and intelligent shot selection enabled him to maintain control and extend his advantage.
There was a renewed sense of intent from Ed at the start of the third game, with several extended rallies reflecting the competitive nature of the contest. A brief shift in momentum saw Ed close the gap, but Toby responded well under pressure, regaining the serve at key moments and ultimately seeing out the match in straight games to secure the championship.
While the scoreline suggests a clear result, it does not fully reflect the quality and intensity of the play, with both competitors demonstrating skill, resilience and sportsmanship throughout.
With both players set to represent Malvern College as the 1st pair at Queen’s next week, this final provided an encouraging glimpse of what promises to be an exciting competition ahead.
