After the challenges of the last couple of years, the hard work and resilience of Malvern College students paid off with pupils accepting places from their university of choice – including Oxford, Cambridge, Durham and Edinburgh universities. Pupils who applied to non-UK universities, including Chicago and New York universities, can now find out if they’ve been accepted.
43% of pupils achieved A*-A grades and 73% of pupils achieved three or four A*-B grades. Over the last five years, pupils have averaged 43% A*-A grades and 71% A*-B grades.
Keith Metcalfe, Headmaster at Malvern College, said: “Our students have shown a real determination to achieve the very best results, despite the ongoing challenges of the past couple of years. We are delighted that their hard work, dedication and resilience has paid off. The high numbers of A*-B grades demonstrates their immensely high standards and levels of commitment.
At the start of July, a total of 49 pupils passed their International Baccalaureate and were awarded their Diplomas with an average score of 36.9 points compared to a global average of 31.9. 38% of the cohort achieved the widely recognised benchmark for world-class performance of 40 points or more out of a maximum possible score of 45. Worldwide only 1% of candidates score more than 44 points and this year we have four candidates who have managed to achieve this with Kitty Holroyd, Robin De Plaa and Josi Jebens getting 44 points while Emilio Dorai Raj scored the maximum possible 45 points.
For Josi, this means she has met her Oxford University offer to study Chemistry, while for Kitty Holroyd, she has been accepted by Bristol University to study Medicine.
Robin De Plaa achieved 44 points and has been accepted to study Nanobiology at Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands, which is ranked 10th for Engineering and Technology in the QS World University Rankings.
Speaking after receiving her results, Robin said: “I am absolutely delighted with my results, it means I can pursue my ambition of studying at TU Delft.
“Studying at Malvern has been a great experience for me. I have learned many life lessons, and made friends which I hope I will have with me for the rest of my life.
“Without the guidance of my amazing teachers at Malvern I could have never dreamed of the results that I have attained.”
A level student, Cate Carpenter achieved 3 A*s and an A grade and in September, will be studying Architecture at the University of Manchester.
She said: “I’m absolutely thrilled with my results and excited to go off to university and meet new people and join societies.
“I’m so thankful for my time at Malvern, it was amazing, I feel that I was able to experience many new opportunities and meet so many new people.
“I really enjoyed my time studying and living at Malvern. I also enjoyed the numerous societies available and had the opportunity to play on the girls football team, take part in DofE and help work with students in the nearby Dyson Perrins School. Malvern has so much to offer and had I not joined, I don’t think I would have had the privilege of experiencing said activities.”
One of Malvern’s top cricketers, Angus Catto gained 3 A*s at A level. He is now planning to take a gap year in Australia, where he will play cricket and travel, ahead of going to Durham University next year to study Chemistry.
He said: “Since leaving Malvern I have had time to appreciate how much I enjoyed my time at the college. I think back and remember the commitment and one-to-one personal contact each teacher gave me both in and outside of the classroom.
“Malvern gave me the opportunity to excel at whatever I wanted to but mainly my personality to turn me into a better, more rounded person.”
Keith Metcalfe added, “Beyond all the numbers, it is wonderful to see so many pupils developing as well-rounded individuals who will thrive at the universities for which they have met their offers. I wish each and every student the very best in their future endeavours, they have all been a credit to Malvern.”
