Lea-Smith Reading Competition

Lea-Smith Reading Competition

As one of the oldest and most-established inter-House competitions at Malvern, the Lea-Smith continues to induce fierce competition and is one of the highlights of Lent Term. In a first, due to the pandemic, the heats this year were held online while the final was performed under strict social-distancing conditions in the Lewis Lecture Theatre while being broadcast live on Malvern TV.

The passages chosen this year were an eclectic mix. They included prose passages from classics and modern fiction, poems, speeches, vlog transcripts and even some original pieces. Special thanks goes to Rev Andrew Law for being this year’s ‘guest’ adjudicator.

The 2021 winners were:
FY: Clara W (House 4)
Remove: Aiza A (House 6)
Hundred/Pre-Sixth: Eve L (House 3)
Lower Sixth: Beatrice F (House 6)
Upper Sixth: Sebastian F (School House)

The overall winning house receives the perpetual Lea-Smith Trophy which was established by the family and named in honour of Lieutenant Leslie Arthur Lea-Smith who was killed in action at the Battle of the Some in 7 July 1916. It is an impressive piece of silverware and, this year, was proudly held aloft by House 6.
