Guidance for participance in the Essay Competition.

Essay Titles 

Participants may choose one of the following titles for their essay: 

  1. To what extent should scientific research be guided by ethical considerations?
  2. How has literature shaped societal attitudes toward social justice?
  3. The Role of Mathematics in solving real-world problems.
  4. How can the humanities help us understand the root causes of global conflicts and inform solutions for the future?
  5. In what ways do the arts reflect and shape cultural identity?
  6. How do globalization and cultural exchange influence the transformation of languages over time?

 

Competition Rules  

  • Word Count: 

Essays must be between 1,500 and 2,000 words, excluding references and footnotes. 

  • Submission Format: 

Essays must be written in English. 

Submit as a PDF or Word document. 

Font: 12pt Times New Roman. . 

  • Originality: 

Submissions must be original and unpublished. 

Essays will be checked for plagiarism using appropriate software. 

  • Deadline: 

All entries must be submitted by Monday 3 March 2025. 

  • Submission Method: 

Email your essay to jennifer.major@malverncollege.org.uk with the subject line: “Essay Competition Submission – [Your Name]”. 

  • Judging Criteria: 

Essays will be judged on: 

Originality of Ideas (30%) 

Quality of Argument (30%) 

Clarity and Style (20%) 

Use of Evidence and References (20%) 

  • Results Announcement: 

Winners will be announced on Monday 24th March. 

 

Prizes 

  • First Prize: £100 and a commendation. 
  • Second Prize: £50 and a commendation.  
  • Third Prize: £25 and a commendation.

Guidance for Participants 

  • Research and Planning: 

Choose a title that resonates with your interests. 

Conduct thorough research using credible sources. 

  • Structure: 

Include a clear introduction, main body, and conclusion. 

Use headings/subheadings where appropriate. 

  • Argument and Evidence: 

Develop a well-reasoned argument supported by evidence. 

Properly cite all references using Harvard or other style e.g. MLA. 

  • Editing and Proofreading: 

Ensure your essay is free from spelling and grammatical errors. 

Read your work aloud to check for flow and clarity.
