The recent Combined Cadet Force (CCF) Exercise ‘Iron Ridge’ was a challenging 36-hour deployment to the Sennybridge Training Area (SENTA) — the UK’s premier dismounted training area. Although the exercise began under wet and windy conditions, the weather soon cleared to reveal crisp late autumn sunshine, setting the scene for an unforgettable experience.
Over the course of the deployment, cadets took part in a wide range of military-themed activities, including shelter construction, sentry duties, camouflage and concealment techniques, and an interactive session exploring the evolution of infantry weapon systems. Evening meals consisted of self-cooked Operational Ration Packs (ORPs) — an experience some enjoyed more than others!
As darkness fell, cadets were introduced to night operations, experimenting with surveillance tools such as night sights, thermal imagers and parachute illumination. These new skills were quickly put to the test during night patrols through woodland and streams, all while avoiding enemy forces.
After a short rest and a ration pack breakfast, cadets faced a new round of challenges, including stalking exercises using the tag rifle system, close-quarter battle paintball scenarios, first aid training and further core CCF skills.
While many cadets embraced the demanding nature of the exercise, others found it a test of endurance and adaptability — particularly as they adjusted to having every moment directed by their leaders. Yet, for all participants, the experience proved invaluable in building teamwork, resilience, and leadership under pressure.
“Overall, the exercise provided an invaluable opportunity for teamwork, resilience and leadership development in a demanding yet rewarding environment”, said John Nichols, CCF Co-ordinator.
