Rich Hughes

Art Teacher ◆ Innovator ◆ Award-winning Designer ◆ Gallery Exhibitor ◆ ROLE MODEL

At Malvern, we are proud to count among our teaching staff the internationally recognised artist and educator Richard Hughes. A practising artist with an award-winning career and global reach, Rich brings a unique blend of real-world experience and deep creative insight to the classroom. A graduate of Goldsmiths, University of London, Rich emerged during the era of “big art” but carved out his own path, focusing instead on the small, the overlooked, and the forgotten. Through sculpture, installation and performance, his work transforms everyday objects into poetic reflections on care, control and the absurd.

Rich’s art has been exhibited around the world, including at Tate Britain, The Modern Institute in Glasgow, and Anton Kern Gallery in New York. Other notable exhibition venues include Brussels, Copenhagen, Athens, Berlin, Los Angeles, Pittsburgh, and Tel Aviv.

In the studio, Rich nurtures independence and experimentation. He challenges pupils to develop  their own voice, see differently, and embrace creative risk. Our pupils gain firsthand insight into  contemporary art practice from someone who not only teaches it but lives it. His presence proves that creativity isn’t just taught – it’s shared.
