John Nichols

CCF Coordinator ◆ Gun Run Coach ◆ Team Builder ◆ Colour Sergeant ◆ Footballer ◆ Expedition Leader ◆ ROLE MODEL

John Nichols exemplifies the transformative power of service and leadership at Malvern College, where he has been the Combined Cadet Force (CCF) Coordinator since 2008. His dedicated guidance has shaped generations of pupils, fostering resilience, leadership, and character. This mission is a natural continuation of his distinguished 22-year career in the British Army, where he was driven by a passion for developing others.

At Malvern, John has influenced over 1,500 pupils across the army, RAF, and Royal Marines sections. The CCF values — courage, teamwork, self-reliance, and responsible citizenship — mirror John’s principles and the Malvern Qualities. He firmly believes CCF is “the making” of pupils, especially those initially lacking confidence, as they lead peers in challenging field exercises and make decisions under pressure.

John leads by example, embodying the growth he fosters in his cadets. His belief in experiential leadership permeates his teaching, ensuring the CCF experience is rigorous yet inclusive and supportive. He brings energy, warmth, and camaraderie to staff life, evident from his popular annual staff shooting competition to his humorous commentaries at the school’s gun run.

Beyond school, John’s active outdoor lifestyle, including hill walking, clay pigeon shooting, and football, reinforces the positive example he sets. John Nichols is a mentor, motivator, and role model, whose legacy at Malvern lies in the confident, capable young people he has helped to shape.
