Did you know that one of Malvern College’s most iconic alumni is Maurice Wilks, the visionary engineer who developed the original Land Rover? Today, that same spirit of innovation and hands-on problem-solving lives on in Sixth Former Harry; a young man following in Wilks’ tyre tracks with a project of remarkable ambition and personal meaning. Alongside his A level studies, Harry has spent years collecting parts and building his very own Land Rover from scratch, a feat made possible through the guidance of his father and grandfather. Attending car sales, scouring auction sites, and learning the intricacies of vehicle construction, Harry has transformed a bare shell into a fully roadworthy vehicle. With a spend of around £6,000, he estimates the current value of his creation could be as high as £20,000. Not that he has any plans to sell – this build marks just the beginning of what he hopes will become a growing collection.
Harry uses the Land Rover not only for his daily school commute but also for his active involvement with Gloucestershire Young Farmers, where he plays a key role. He has helped organise the annual charity Tractor Run, raising money for local causes and strengthening community ties.
Curious, committed, and community-minded, Harry embodies the same spirit of ingenuity that Maurice Wilks once brought to the Land Rover. No doubt, Wilks would be proud to see a fellow Malvernian carrying the torch forward.
