Malvern College launches Midlands’ first Chelsea Football Club Development Programme

Malvern College is partnering with Premier League giants Chelsea FC to launch the Midlands’ first development programme of its kind, giving talented young footballers the opportunity to pursue an enhanced sporting pathway alongside a leading independent education.

Available to boys and girls aged 11-18 at Malvern College and The Downs Malvern, the selective programme is designed for ambitious young players seeking to develop their football while maintaining a strong academic pathway.

Delivered using Chelsea FC coaching methods and staff, the programme will provide enhanced football coaching, performance support and individual player development alongside Malvern College’s renowned academic, pastoral and boarding provision. Pupils will continue to study for GCSEs, A-levels or the International Baccalaureate, with their football development integrated into their wider education.

The partnership builds on Malvern College’s long-standing football tradition and historic links with Chelsea FC through the Mears family, who founded and ran the club from its inception until the early 1980s. Many members of the family were educated at Malvern College.

Pupils accepted onto the programme will benefit from a comprehensive weekly development schedule including technical and tactical coaching, strength and conditioning, speed and agility development, recovery and mobility, sports psychology, nutrition, leadership and resilience workshops, together with individual player development, match analysis and performance feedback. They will continue to represent Malvern College or The Downs Malvern in school fixtures while also accessing additional development opportunities where appropriate.

Unlike a traditional full-time football academy, pupils remain fully immersed in every aspect of school life. The programme has been designed to complement, rather than replace, the broader educational experience, ensuring young people continue to benefit from outstanding teaching, exceptional pastoral care, a vibrant co-curricular programme and the opportunities offered by a leading boarding school.

It is aimed at pupils who demonstrate both a genuine commitment to football and the potential to thrive within an enhanced performance environment. Selection will consider not only current playing level, but also attitude, coachability, athletic potential and the ability to balance sporting ambition with academic expectations.

Mark Hardinges, Director of Sport at Malvern College, said: “We are delighted to be launching the Midlands’ first Chelsea FC Development Programme. This partnership reflects our belief that young people should never have to compromise between an exceptional education and pursuing their sporting ambitions.

“By combining Chelsea FC’s coaching methodology with the breadth of a Malvern education, we are creating an environment where talented young footballers can develop technically, physically and personally, while continuing to thrive academically and as members of our wider school community.”

The Chelsea FC Development Programme will initially be available as a pilot to selected current pupils from January 2027, with applications open now for new pupils joining Malvern College and The Downs Malvern from September 2027.

A limited number of Sports Scholarships are available at 11+, 13+ and 16+, recognising pupils who demonstrate exceptional sporting ability and potential. Families requiring financial assistance are also encouraged to enquire about the College’s means-tested bursary programme.

Families interested in learning more about the programme are warmly invited to attend the next Malvern College Open Day on Saturday, 3 October, where they will have the opportunity to meet members of the Admissions Team, explore the campus and discover how the Chelsea FC Development Programme fits within the wider Malvern educational experience.
