Education at Malvern College is about far more than academic success. Alongside achieving excellent results, pupils are encouraged to develop the confidence, independence and practical skills they’ll need long after they leave school.
One of the ways we do this is through our dedicated Life Skills programme, giving pupils the opportunity to step away from the classroom and explore the real-world knowledge that will help them navigate life with confidence.
As Heidi Andrews, Head of Life Skills, explains: “We run a fantastic range of workshops and carousel opportunities for the students, where they get to choose what they want to spend time doing.”
Learning Skills That Last a Lifetime
Every pupil is different, which is why our Life Skills programme offers a wide range of workshops that allow them to follow their interests while developing valuable life skills.
Across the day, pupils can take part in practical sessions such as self-defence, survival skills and cookery, alongside workshops covering financial literacy, study skills, mental wellbeing, relationships and sex education. Each workshop is designed to give pupils practical knowledge they can apply both now and in the future.
Some of the most valuable sessions encourage open conversations around topics that aren’t always discussed in the classroom. Expert facilitators lead dedicated workshops on identity, wellbeing and relationships, while girls also take part in sessions exploring menstrual health in an open, supportive environment where they can ask questions with confidence.
Looking Ahead to Life Beyond School
Life Skills at Malvern is also about helping pupils explore what comes next.
One highlight of the programme saw pupils visit the University of Worcester, where they experienced university life while taking part in interactive criminology, forensics and justice workshops. Through role play and practical activities, they gained an insight into studying these subjects at a higher level and left inspired by the possibilities ahead.
Another popular workshop focused on independent travel, encouraging pupils to research destinations, compare flight options and build a realistic travel budget. By planning future adventures, pupils develop confidence, independence and valuable decision-making skills that will stay with them long after they leave Malvern.
Preparing Pupils for Life
Life Skills has become an important part of the Malvern experience because it helps pupils develop qualities that cannot always be taught through traditional lessons. Whether they’re learning practical everyday skills, building financial confidence or exploring future careers, every workshop is designed to prepare them for life beyond school.
Reflecting on the programme, Heidi says: “I think it’s these days that contribute to life at Malvern and make it so enriching… I’m really proud of what we’re doing, and I think it equips students for life in the future in a really fabulous and bespoke way.”
It’s this commitment to educating the whole person that makes a Malvern education distinctive. Alongside academic excellence, we want every pupil to leave with the confidence, resilience and life skills they’ll need to thrive wherever their future takes them.
