Mark Hardinges

No. 4 & No. 1 | 1996 | Housemaster at Malvern College

What is your favourite memory of Malvern College?

Playing 1st XI cricket on the Senior. Playing football against Repton in the Centenary Game (1-1). I loved my time in House 1 and made some life-long friends.

What attracted you to your particular career and what do you enjoy most about it?

When I left school I was signed by Gloucestershire to play cricket. I did this for 10 years and then when I was released I got the call from Bert Lacey about a possible teaching job. I was hooked as soon as I walked around the College. The chance to play a part in the development of young people really appealed to me.

What part did Malvern College play in giving you the necessary skills for your chosen path?

Boarding since I was 10 allows me to empathise with the boys under my care. I have been through what they are experiencing both good and bad. Playing team sports at Malvern developed so many skills. Teamwork, resilience, collaboration. All of which are needed when running a boarding house.

What are your ambitions?

To carry on running a good house. I would like to teach abroad at some stage.

What advice would you give to current pupils contemplating working or studying in your field?

Make sure you enjoy all aspects of the job. Teaching in class is rewarding but all the other aspects of school life combined make teaching even better. Enjoy being a school master not just a teacher.

What advice would you give to current pupils about making the most of their time at the school?

Try different things. The House system at Malvern lends itself to the chance to be involved in different aspects of school life. I loved doing the House singing and House drama. Great memories.

Any final thoughts?

Malvern was a great place to go to school and has been a wonderful place to work. That is why I am sending my children here!!
