Malvern College is delighted to announce that it has been awarded the Silver Award at the 2026 Oppidan Mentoring Awards, marking the second consecutive year the College has been recognised for excellence in mentoring.
The judging panel commended the College’s approach, noting they were “struck by the innovative practice and dedication to mentoring in evidence in schools across the globe.”
Mentoring at Malvern College is not a standalone initiative but a deeply embedded culture that underpins all aspects of school life. A comprehensive, multi-layered approach supports pupils academically, pastorally and personally, ensuring that every individual is both supported and empowered to lead.
At the heart of this culture is the College’s House system, where daily pastoral mentoring is complemented by structured peer mentoring. Senior pupils act as role models and guides, supporting younger pupils as they transition into boarding life, develop confidence and build a strong sense of belonging.
Beyond the House structure, mentoring is enriched through a wide range of internal and external collaborations. Old Malvernians play a vital role, regularly returning to the College to share their experiences, offer career insights and provide guidance on pathways beyond school. These intergenerational connections create a powerful mentoring cycle, linking current pupils with those who have successfully navigated university, apprenticeships and professional careers.
Pupils also benefit from an extensive programme of guest speakers and visiting professionals, who bring real-world expertise into the school. From industry leaders and entrepreneurs to healthcare professionals and journalists, these speakers provide invaluable perspectives and mentorship, helping pupils to understand the opportunities and challenges of an evolving global landscape.
Targeted mentoring support is also provided for future pathways, including applications to universities and apprenticeships. Pupils receive tailored guidance through every stage of the process, from personal statements and interview preparation to exploring international opportunities and alternative career routes. This ensures that each pupil is equipped to make informed, confident decisions about their future.
This culture extends into initiatives such as Life Skills programmes and leadership training, where pupils develop practical competencies, resilience and independence, alongside the interpersonal skills essential for success in higher education and the workplace.
