NSSO attracts over two hundred young musicians annually from across the UK, along with a number of international students, drawn by the quality of the musical experience offered along with Malvern’s outstanding facilities. Admission to one of the ensembles is by audition.

There are three orchestras broadly defined by musical ability and age: NSSO Philharmonic (grade 8 and above), NSSO Sinfonia (grade 6/7) and NSSO Academy (grade 3-5). There is also a unique Conducting Course for teenagers and a Big Band. Numerous participants over the years have gone on to play with the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain but many (for whom a single annual course is a better fit for their aspirations and interests) return each year, progressing through the ensembles.

There is a comprehensive social and sporting programme which complements the musical schedule, and final concerts are given at venues such as Snape Maltings, Symphony Hall, Birmingham, and The Pittville Pump Room, Cheltenham.
