Malvern College’s first international campus, Malvern College Qingdao, opened in September 2012.
Located in Qingdao, in China's Shandong Province, Malvern College Qingdao is thought to be the first purpose-built international secondary school for Chinese nationals that is backed by a leading independent UK school and licensed by the Chinese authorities.
Now in its fourth year, the school currently has around 440 pupils and is growing rapidly towards an ultimate capacity of around 900. The school operates from a new purpose-built campus of around 50 acres, which includes stunning new facilities such as an indoor swimming pool, a fitness suite, a visual and performing arts centre and third-generation Astroturf rugby and football pitches. The famous Laoshan mountains, birthplace of Taoism and the source of Laoshan spring water, form a backdrop to the campus, invoking an echo of the Malvern Hills and their position overlooking Malvern College in the UK.
Students at Malvern College Qingdao take a two-year A level programme as full boarders, following a foundation course, with a view to going on to further education in the UK, USA, Canada, Australia or New Zealand. Subjects offered at the school include Maths, Further Maths, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Economics, Computer Studies, Geography and Business Studies, with an ancillary Liberal Arts programme focusing on developing high level English literacy and language skills.
The school is managed by the Headmaster, John Kenny, in partnership with the College’s Chinese partners. Malvern College has close and regular involvement in ensuring the quality of the educational offering, through regular visits to Qingdao by senior members of the College’s management. Malvern College also regularly carries out a rigorous ISI-type inspection of its sister school each year to ensure that educational standards are met and maintained.
