Drama at Malvern

Pupils are encouraged to play a full part in all aspects of theatre, as actor, stage manager, costume assistant or technician.

Outside of the academic timetable Drama is vibrant and plentiful and there is a framework of productions in evidence throughout the year. Keen dramatists in the Upper Sixth present a valedictory production in October and a large-scale major presentation (Musical or Play) is staged in late November by members of the Lower Sixth and Hundred (Year 11). A Remove (Year 10) production is staged in January, followed by the house-based, one-act play competition in the Spring Term. In the Summer Term the Foundation Year (Year 9) present a drama production. Biennially we also present a Drama Scholars’ play.

In the Foundation Year (Year 9) pupils receive one 55-minute period of Drama per week. The course uses theatre games, improvisations and short script extracts to develop pupils’ skills of movement, response, speech, use of performance space and audience awareness.

In the first year of the GCSE course, pupils develop experience of working practically with scripts and on self-devised unscripted pieces. They are expected to work together quickly and purposefully in groups of various sizes and with different people.

In the Sixth Form, the A level Drama and Theatre course features a combination of textual study and scripted/devised performances, together with responding to live theatre productions, providing students with a stimulating course with strong practical elements.

Speech and Drama lessons are available by request. Pupils receive coaching and preparation for LAMDA awards or local drama festivals. A programme of live theatre visits to Stratford, London, Cheltenham or Malvern is offered to students of drama.
